Ancient Viral Gene Splicing May Be Responsible For Some Cases of Lou Gehrig's Disease
An ancient virus, known as human endogenous retrovirus K (HERV-K,) that spliced itself into haman genes may play a role in Lou Gehric's Disease according to a new study. Study leader, Avindra Nath was originally treating an HIV patient with antiretoviral drugs when he noticed that the man's Lou Gehrig's symptoms also improved. After doing some research, Nath discovered that people reported seeing reverse transcriptase in the blood, which is a hallmark of retroviruses due to the fact they can use it to insert copies of their genes into their host's.

Not only can the mealworms eat plastic, but after studying the growth and health of said mealworms, they were found to be just as healthy as other mealworms who did not eat plastic.

New Study Suggests That Viruses Are Alive
Viruses are typically not considered to be living things, due to the fact that they cannot replicate without a host (you for example.) So why are they now (possibly) being seen as living things? For one, some bacteria and fungi also need hosts to replicate, so this is not a feature that is exclusive to viruses. Another reason is the discovery of what are called mimiviruses, which are so large, they were originally mistaken for bacteria, and they contain mechanisms necessary for protein synthesis. Finally scientists performed a test in which they examined the folds of proteins within 5,000 organisms (3,500 of which were viruses) which led to the discovery of 442 protein folds that are common between viruses and cells.
Azealia Banks in Trouble With the LGBT Community
Azealia Banks seems to be having some trouble connecting with her LGBT fans lately. First, she reportedly called a flight attendant a "faggot" during an altercation. Shortly after, to address the issue, she tweeted "I am bisexual, my brother is trans. My employees are all gay men..nothing else to say." This was tame enough although the series of Tweets posted later weren't quite as acceptable to most.
